LITTLE BIG PORTRAIT of Rikke Brogaard
Make a wiSh...
After living in five different countries and experiencing some difficult times in her life, Rikke Brogaard created Cahana Jewelry in 2013. We met up with her at the Tea Shop where she told us about the story behind Cahana and of course all her local tips in and around Monaco..
Born in Denmark, Rikke first followed a marketing career before pursuing her creative dream. “When I was a young girl I was drawing all the time- it's fair to say that creativity has always stuck with me, but there were not many creative job opportunities back then so eventually I took a more conventional path and got a business degree”, she tells us.
It was only after several years that she got her first opportunity to move into a creative career when she began to design eyewear for a startup she founded with her then husband in Los Angeles, where they lived until 2004 when the US got hit by the financial crisis. Aware of the impact the economical situation would have on their company, they decided to relocate their business to Europe, first to Switzerland and later to Belgium. The European move was a decisive period for Rikke, filled with both very happy and sad events. “I had my first daughter at that ti me, she was such a joy”, she says as her eyes brighten up. But the same year tragedy struck when she lost her beloved sister to breast cancer. That period would also mark the end of her marriage, which eventually led her to move back to Denmark, in her late thirties and as a single mum.
“After having had a very difficult year I started to slowly get better and one day whilst I was thinking about my sister and how she always taught me to believe in the power of positive affirmations and how they can impact your life, I came up with the idea to create pieces of jewelry that would allow me to carry my affirmations always with me, close to my heart”, Rikke tells us. The timing was perfect, she had just sold her old company and was ready for a new venture.
Cahana- make a wish!
In 2013 Rikke started to do some initial designs and after a short trip to India she found a factory to work with. A few months later, Cahana was born. "The name Cahana comes from Hindi and means “to wish” , she tells us. In fact, when you buy a piece of Rikke’s jewelry, it comes with a small paper roll for you to write your wish on, which you then fold and place inside so that you can keep your affirmation with you at all times.
It was also around that time that Rikke met the love of her life at a music festival in Denmark- a Dane, based in Monaco. She soon relocated to Monaco where they now live with their children. “I am in a good place right now. “, she tells us. "I feel very lucky to be able to work from home so I can be with my children but still do the work I enjoy” she says. " I couldn’t be happier”, she adds with a smile.
Given Rikke's entrepreneurial spirit and positive attitude combined with her genuinely beautiful, delicate and meaningful designs we have no doubt Cahana will go far! Needless to say, we already have our eyes on a few pieces..
